Case Study - Nissan R35 GTR (2017)

This Nissan R35 GTR came to us for wheel refurbishment, paint repair to boot lid and minor servicing including oil change and rear drop links. Customer has previously completed full machine polish paint correction, PPF renewal and full ceramic coating with us.

Whilst completing works we identified that the subframe and underbody was showing signs of corrosion and rust. This is a common issue with GTRs of all eras R32, R33, R34 and R35 GTR.

R35 GTR Subframe Corrosion & Rust

The vehicle had previously been undercoated, however the company who completed works simply sprayed over the existing dirt. Trapping contamination and salt against the body. This resulted in several areas of rust and accelerated corrosion, particularly around both subframes and all of the undertray and arch liner fixing points. If left untreated this would lead to serious corrosion and significant expense replacing corroded components.

Previous undercoating attempts sprayed over existing dirt and missed all known rust / corrosion areas

After speaking with the customer and discussing potential options we agreed on a underbody deep clean and decontamination first to see what hidden damage was lurking underneath. Our process included:

  • Chemical decontamination

  • Steam clean

  • Tar & glue remover to remove stubborn and engrained wax / dirt

  • Final steam clean and IPA wipe down

R35 GTR underbody deep clean prior to protection. All previous undercoating & dirt removed.

This left us with a near blank canvas (8hrs later) and identified majority of rust treatment would be localised around the subframes, with pockets of corrosion around the main floor structure. Our process to tackle this included:

  • Abrasive removal of loose rust

  • Chemical rust converter

  • Black high impact rubberised coating around subframe and chassis rails

  • Clear glass fibre reinforced polymer for remainder of floor, arches, subframe and suspension.

  • Plastic treatment to under guards and replaced

  • Grease and replace bolts

The underbody, subframe, arches, suspension components and floor of this supercar killer are now fully protected for many years to come.

Freshly refurbished wheels in shadow chrome, were ceramic coated and refitted. Making this GTR stand out from the crowd even more than usual. Wheels were stripped, road rash sanded, chemically dipped before assessment for any damage. Wheels were then powder coated and lacquered during a multi stage process to achieve the stunning shadow chrome effect.

Mechanical works were completed including oil and filter change, with Mobil 1 0W40 and oil filter. Service interval reset and maintenance records updated. Rear drop links were replaced and suspension inspected. We noted a slight camber imbalance which was causing uneven tyre wear, customer notified tyres changed and alignment arranged.

Corrosion on the Nissan GTR is common in the boot drainage channels, causing blistering which eventually breaks through to the outer skin and is visually obvious. In order to repair this and prevent further spread, the boot lid was carefully removed and sent to our expert paint shop for restoration and perfect colour match.

A final maintenance detail and top up ceramic coating to the boot lid, this GTR was back on the road with a very happy customer.

All works completed in one week from start to completion.
